Annabelle Wanjiku Portfolio

Artist Profile

As a young girl living in the Nyeri region of Kenya, Annabelle Wanjiku’s urge to create first emerged on her journeys to the river to draw water. There, Wanjiku would sit down on the riverbank and dig her hands into the soft clay. The cool, porous mud would whisk from her mind the task she was sent to do, and she would spend hours lost in the delicate process of molding figures of animals and people. When Wanjiku entered primary school, she discovered paint and has not put down her brush since. Today, her airy, dream-like compositions and unwavering commitment to creation remain the soil that grounds the roots of contemporary East African art and nurtures the dreams of aspiring artists.
